Katarzyna Karpowicz, born in Krakow, Poland in 1985, currently lives and paints in Pangbourne, Berkshire, England. Since completing her Master of Arts degree in painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in 2010, she has achieved a degree of renown in Europe and has had 11 solo exhibitions in Kraków, Warsaw, Zamość, Wrocław, Gdynia (Poland), Budapest (Hungary) and Lower Basildon (England). She has also participated in several group exhibitions. In 2014, Katarzyna was ranked in the top 10 on the list of the most promising young Polish Artists by the Art Compas – the official ranking institution under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland (http://www.kompassztuki.pl/).
Katarzyna considers herself to be a representative painter. Her paintings are, on the one hand, created as a series inspired by her personal experiences and subjective observations of reality and, on the other hand, intuition, dreams and made-up stories that are symbolically connected to the painter’s life. She identifies herself with the art movement “Transavantgarde,” the Italian version of Neo-expressionism, a movement which focuses on figurative art as well as mythic imagery, suggesting a return to the original meaning of art where a painting is nothing more than a painting, i.e. a subjective, figurative and narrative depiction of a painter’s individual mode of expression.
Katarzyna has a long list of awards from organizations such Art Compas and several National Biennials in Poland, among others. Her paintings are in private collections in several countries including the US, Mexico, India, Sri Lanka, Oman, Spain, Russia, England, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Poland.
M.C.: " Your paintings are oneiric, fairytale. You attach importance to dreams and intuition.”
K.K.: “I think it’s because I treat painting as a very personal and exceptionally ‘my own’ thing. I do not create paintings. I extract them out of myself."
